Artistic independence or stupidity?

Sat Jul 26, 2008, 10:29 AM
As a so-called artist I make everything with my own two hands. Each and every line of my drawings is made by me. Of course, I use reference photos. But every touch of colour, every trace of the brush is mine and mine only...
That's why I am stupid.
I work as hard as I can, as often as I can. I learn. I curse, start all over again. My work takes hours, days, weeks. With every single piece of it I feel the progress. It's an amazing feeling. Priceless.
That's why I am stupid.
The further I am the more independent I am. I don't need the photos as much as I needed them a year ago. Besides I've got a few friends who help me whenever I don't know how to draw something and gladly become my models. I am making photos of people and things to have something to practice with.
I try to paint fabric, tattoos, patterns by myself.
That's why I am so damn stupid.
My work will never be as beautiful and detailed as the work of some great digital artists because... because I don't really do DIGITAL paintings. I don't (and don't know how to) use digital patterns and textures. I don't know where to get them or how to make them myself. I use only default brushes.
And I feel so terribly stupid...

ARGH! Noz mi sie w kieszeni otworzyl jak to przeczytalem. Twoje grafiki sa GENIALNE, sa naturalne i to wystarczy.

Sprawia to w sumie sporo radosci, jesli potem sie uzyje tych nowosci.
(mnie to i tak nie wychodzi ;p)

(chyba ze masz gdzies digitale i chcesz dalej rysowac jak rysujesz i chcesz zeby ludzie przestali sie zachwycac CGkami, a ja zle zrozumialam)
No to mamy podobny problem.
Wiesz, po prostu.. keep up the good work.
Cośtam zdecydowanie :)
To "cośtam" mi się najbardziej podoba :P
Tak więc pracujmy jak umiemy :)
A jak zapragnę tekstur to sobie sama zrobię. O! Taka będę! :)

Psst... iskra is over!

Masz konkretny styl.

Yeah it's a tough one. I've virtually given up painting now. You work so hard to learn to paint anything you want, but someone can come along with a new computer program or all the textures they've gotten off the net, and knock up something that to the casual observer looks just as good (although your work is outstanding) with a few mouse clicks.

I think the difference is only in the personal satisfaction levels. I've come to the conclusion that if you want to create artwork/illustrations for other people you need to take advantage of the shortcuts offered by 3d software, textures etc, or else you're just ripping yourself off. But after going down this path, i've lost all interest in art- there is no satisfaction in this approach. but now that I know that with ';poser' I can have a realistic shaded figure in any shape or size completed in ten minutes, I can't make myself spend ten hours drawing one from scratch.
I realise now that it's the creative process of painting something entirely yourself that is the thing I like about art. The thing that made me want to do it.
But from a commercial standpoint, and with todays society so focused on money, and any digitally painted artwork being considered much the same by the general population, no matter how it was created, I just don't know what to do now.
If you're still getting that satisfaction from creating your artworks all yourself, then stick with it. Do it for yourself and forget about what others are doing. Yeah they can produce three pics a week and are making heaps of cash, but you are satisfying your spirit. And you can be truly proud of your achievments. That's more important if you ask me.
